Summary
Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is a unique coastal destination in Pismo Beach, California where visitors can drive directly onto the sand and camp along the shoreline. Located on the Central Coast, itβs one of the only places in California where beach driving and oceanfront dispersed-style camping are permitted, making it a popular stop for overlanders and road-trippers.
Access is via designated beach entry points, with a $5/day day-use fee and vehicle hours from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The area offers wide open space to spread out and camp, with room for individual setups or larger groups. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended due to soft sand and the potential for getting stuck. Tide levels can impact access and camping availability, and during high tide conditions, certain areas may be closed to vehicles or overnight use.
With its open beach setting, ocean views, and direct sand access, Oceano Dunes is a unique place to camp while exploring the California coast.
